Wake on LAN (WoL) typically stops working due to disabled firmware settings, aggressive Windows power-saving features, or misconfigured network adapter properties. When configured correctly, your network interface card (NIC) stays partially powered while the computer is off or asleep so it can listen for a remote “magic packet.”
If your computer refuses to wake up remotely, step through these sequential fixes to resolve the problem. 1. Disable Windows Fast Startup
Windows Fast Startup uses a hybrid hibernation state that frequently prevents the network card from monitoring incoming magic packets. Open the Control Panel and navigate to Power Options. Click Choose what the power buttons do on the left side. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save your changes. 2. Enable WoL in Your Motherboard BIOS/UEFI
If the firmware blocks power to the network card during a shutdown state, Windows configuration changes will have no effect. Wake On Lan not working – Ask Ubuntu
